ANDIE’S POST
Baby's First Pride: What Do You Hope for in Community?
Last weekend was a big weekend. UBC went bowling at Main Event, we had Out on the Brazos, and the coordinator for CBF Texas was in town. I also attended a birthday party and hosted a birthday party. It was place to place and event to event, and as a parent who also happens to be a pastor, I have sworn that I will never allow my job to be the reason my kids resent church. I've never made them act like "pastor's kids" or be at the church anytime the doors are open. Weekends like this run that risk, however. After bowling, I noticed a family in my MiCasa was sticking around to play arcade games, and I knew how much Hazel would love to do that, too. It was already an hour past the twins' bedtime, so I asked if Hazel could stay with them and if they were willing to bring her home. ENTHUSIASTIC yes. I was trying to coordinate a time when both Mae and Hazel could come to OOTB and help at our table, but with only one teen driver in the house, we needed outside help. Hazel wasn't able to go last year, so it felt even more important to figure out a solution. So I texted a mom whose kiddo we take to youth group every week and asked if she would be willing to play chaufer for Hazel: Another enthusiastic yes. When we had to drive to Louisiana last minute to pick up our new vehicle after Jeremy's accident, I texted some UBC moms in our neighborhood and asked if they would be on call for my kids in case they needed anything. Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I have multiple other stories over the last few months that I could share, but my point is this: Showing up for people matters. It matters when we do it, it matters when we receive it, and it is a significant reason for the Church to exist. Living with one another in meaningful community both resources and grounds us for the work of Jesus in our midst. Thank you to those who have offered this kind of care to me and mine, and thank you to those who have been willing to accept support from me in return. It is formative, and it is good.
