NICOLE’S POST

Save the Date!

All Church Retreat is happening this fall. We are headed back to Meridian State Park with GTG Outdoors October 9-11.

This retreat will be for the campers & the glampers. We’ve reserved some of the indoor shelters & the indoor dining hall! If tents aren’t your thing, you can choose one of these instead. GTG provides gear, meals and their expertise, and we get a fun fall camping trip together (and s’mores. Always s’mores!)

Keep an eye out for registration! And email nicole@ubcwaco.org if you have any questions.

EMBRACE BEAUTY FUND

As we’ve navigated changes and created a new vision for Ubc, we have found that we have an increasing need for meeting our budget goals. Would you consider establishing a recurring donation to our community? Recurring donations allow us to have a sense of how much money we are working with each month, which as you might imagine is extremely helpful in budgeting. We are of course open to one-time donations as well :). Please feel free to share with your friends, loved ones and social media as we work together to meet this need.

You can donate and read more about the giving campaign here.

THIS WEEK

JAMIE’S POST

Last time I did the newsletter, Andy Clark, bassist extradonaire, asked me if I had forgotten about it until the last minute since I just posted a poem. But I didn’t. I just like putting poetry in your path. And so here is a poem by Marcus Wicker.

How to Continue Loving the World Despite Years of Impediment

If death is the absence of life, / then death’s death is life.
—Sun Ra

      Gather your losses, oblong
& indiscriminate: avocado rot,
      football, cracked soap dish;
dropped eggshells, embryo
      gone. Gather mutilated joy.
Smelted promises. Aloft,
here & now. In open air.
Gather your heartbreak, wind-
      ing & windowless. Animal
the shadow, lurking
      at the edges
of your mouth.
      Needle into a nest
your intricate sorrows.
      Roost there. Gather
yourself. In a clearing—
      Or gather your losses
like twin sheets, stripped
      from a sick child’s bed.
I know I know it’s difficult
      to face it alone.
To know you must
      gather your darkness
or lose yourself to the animal
      that thrives therein. To vanquish
your losses in daylight,
      gather your life
by the scruff. Hold on
      to what you can.

EMBRACE BEAUTY FUND

We’ve never been great about asking for money. It can be awkward and many of us have had experiences where money and God-talk were intermingled in ways that felt predatory or manipulative. And yet, Ubc survives in a physical sense with the money that people give. So we are asking for money.

As we’ve navigated changes and created a new vision for Ubc, we have found that we have an increasing need for meeting our budget goals. ANDIE’S POST

Hi friends!  I have a problem.  I am currently watching The Sheep Detectives, and I've realized I need sheep.  I've needed goats for a while now, that's not new.  But sheep?  Must. Have. Baby. Lambs.  In truth, I have two problems: I need sheep, and I can't have them.  Can't, and shouldn't have them.  One of the hardest things I've ever learned is to stay within my capacity.  I'm continuing to learn that each time I say yes to something when I should've said no.  I used to struggle to keep healthy margin because I felt like I had something to prove.  My insecurities and my incessant need for dopamine combined to make the perfect cocktail for burnout.  Now, I realize that even though becoming A LITERAL SHEPHERD would be incredible, leaving space affords me the bandwidth to show up when I'm needed unexpectedly.  To stay fully present with my family, friends, and congregants.  To say yes to advocacy that I would otherwise do poorly.  To hear the sweet whispers of the Spirit when she draws my attention to common beauty.  Summer is wrapping up, and I know that can send some of us spinning. My encouragement is to delight in every last bit you can, but don't run yourself into the ground trying to hang on to something impermanent.  You've done enough; trust me, you don't need sheep!

THIS WEEK

Pizza & Pints- Thursday, July 30th, 5:30pm

College Crafternoon @ CG Franklin- Sunday, 12pm
After church on Sunday (8/2), college students are invited to hangout with Greer at the Common Grounds on Franklin for a crafter-noon! Watercolor supplies will be available for use, but if you want to bring something you've been working on, all the crafts are welcome! Great before the back-to-school rush hits. See you there!

JAMIE’S POST

Here’s a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins:

It was a hard thing to undo this knot

It was a hard thing to undo this knot.
The rainbow shines, but only in the thought
Of him that looks. Yet not in that alone,
For who makes rainbows by invention?
And many standing round a waterfall
See one bow each, yet not the same to all,
But each a hand's breadth further than the next.
The sun on falling waters writes the text
Which yet is in the eye or in the thought.
It was a hard thing to undo this knot.

ANDIE’S POST

One Nation (Among Many) Under God

I'm sure it is unsurprising that, even when the 4th of July fell on a weekend, it was not fodder for my sermon on Sunday.  The newsletter?  Different story.  This year, I saw post after post online with the message of “I'm patriotic, but in an equal rights, trans kids deserve care, Black Lives Matter, love is love kind of way.” And I am here for all of that! I think it is deeply patriotic to see how your nation truly is and is not functioning and vow to be a part of the solutions. It is deeply patriotic to create inroads to equality when we pledge liberty and justice for all. It is deeply patriotic to critique. That same concept applies to our faith, as well. With the rise and volume of Christian Nationalism in our country, we see the Bible being co-opted and twisted in more violent and insidious ways than in recent recollection. While it is easy to say “That's not my Jesus, that's not my Bible,” the reality is Jesus is more expansive than even we progressives give him credit for being. When we see or hear our siblings in Christ practice exclusionary theology, let's critique. Let's name. Let's call out. The love we have for God and country is different, but some of the ways we show that love can be the same. It is through loving something enough to want what's best for it that we all find a home.

NICOLE’S POST

Passport Kids Camp

We are taking 10 campers (11 if you count honorary camper, Virginia Dizdar) to Brownwood, TX this year.

Camp is a meaningful experience for our kids. It offers a chance to step away from the distractions of everyday life and spend intentional time growing in faith, building friendships, and discovering more about who God has created them to be. Passport Camp in particular is very aligned with Ubc’s mission, and I’m excited to Love God, Embrace Beauty and Live Life to the Fullest with our wonderful kids.

This year, I’ll be bringing my youngest along with us. While she may be the smallest camper in the group, I’m especially grateful to serve Ubc kids while keeping my little one close. I continue to be grateful that Ubc is not a church of lines and separation, but a church of seeing that everything God made is holy and has space. I am grateful to have the opportunity to step away from every day life myself with my littlest, and embrace kids camp together!

As we prepare for camp, we would love your prayers for safe travel, for our campers and leaders to experience joy, connection, and growth, and for opportunities to connect with who God is. We will also be commissioning and sending the kids and chaperones off during the July 19 service, and we would love for our church family to be part of that moment as we pray over our campers together.

If you would like to support our trip in a tangible way, we are collecting a few supplies for camp. We are in need of grab-and-go snacks, packs of water bottles, packs of Gatorade, hand soap, hand sanitizer, band-aids, and large bags of candy. You can also donate to ubcwaco.org/give and choose “kids camp”; funds will be used directly for our camp needs. Thank you, Ubc, for supporting our kids and being the community our families can count on!

Mealtrain for the Glovers
The Glovers have recently become licensed fosters and are welcoming their very first foster baby to their home— a newborn baby girl! Let’s wrap them in support, meals, prayers and love as they begin this journey.

ANDIE’S POST

Christmas in July

My current coping strategy is to fight fascism with whimsy.  In a world that struggles to hold two things true, I’m on a mission to both acknowledge the reality of this moment in time and face it head on with a cup that I’ve been intentional to fill.  To that end, I introduce you to The 12 Days of Christmas in July.  Not a new concept, but one that I think would benefit us this year.  Starting Sunday, July 5th, we are observing 12 Days of Christmas with calendars that outline different activities for the week.  We will culminate the season with a Christmas with the Kranks movie night (13+ please!) as an opportunity to break up the summer heat with some good old fashioned wintery whimsy.  Staying unnecessarily fanciful might just be the way we stay sane, so please join me for service on the 5th for our 12 Days of Christmas in July kickoff!

ANDIE’S POST

Today, I want to share a Jewish blessing that was shared with me by my friend Rabbi Sabine Meyer of the Temple Rodef Sholom here in Waco.  It was written by Rabbi Reuben Zellman, and it is a reminder that we all share the complexities, nuances, and multitudes that bind us together:

As the sun sinks and the colors of the day turn, we offer a blessing for the twilight,
for twilight is neither day nor night, but in-between.
We are all twilight people. We can never be fully labeled or defined.
We are many identities and loves, many genders and none.

We are in between roles, at the intersection of histories, or between place and place.
We are crisscrossed paths of memory and destination, streaks of light swirled together. We are neither day nor night.
We are both, neither, and all.
May the sacred in-between of this evening suspend our certainties, soften
our judgments, and widen our vision.
May this in-between light illuminate our way to the God who transcends all categories and definitions.
May the in-between people who have come to pray be lifted up into this twilight.
We cannot always define; we can always say a blessing.
Blessed are You, God of all, who brings on the twilight.

JAMIE’S POST

Happy Pride Month! As has become my custom, I’d like to use my newsletter week to put poetry before you. Padraig O’Tuama is a theological, liturgical, existential, and poetic voice that is important to me. I read this several times this week.

Our Lady of the Garden

All this time, I felt like I had to describe
the things I did, and what was done to me,
how I had to wander a strange world for years,
needing to be busy, sleeping in strange beds,
searching through cities for chapels to weep in,
learning the stitches that keep a ripped heart
together for a while, when what I really need
to say is that it rained all night and morning,
and the drops were a percussion on the trees,
and after the sun rose, I saw an insect land on the railing
and take shelter, and a bird drank from a leaf.
Wild pigs exploded from the bushes where they’d hid,
and the sage in the bowl smelt of memory and musk.
A toad sat—still as any god—on the wet stone.

GREER’S POST

Hello, friends! Greer here (and rhyming apparently). This past semester has been so much NEW. I am stepping into the youth pastor role here at UBC, exploring a new role at Fabled Bookshop & Café, recently moved into a new apartment, and leaving behind the Baylor bubble as graduation rapidly approaches. On Friday, I will graduate from Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary with my Master of Divinity… which is a fancy way of saying I spent a lot of time in school studying pastor things. My therapist and I have frequently explored how scary the newness can be and how leaving behind what once was can feel big. Yet, I am filled with such deepest hope as I finish my schoolwork and begin this work. UBC, I see you as a space of deep hope and safety when the world around us roils, and it is beautiful to see. It is an honor to be a part of this work that you all do. My time in school may be ending, but I am very much looking forward to learning from you as a congregation and walking with our middle and high school students. Already having observed and now attending youth group, I am so eager to get to know them, be a welcoming space, and support their journeys through their time at UBC. Quite a few UBC friends share my taste in books, so if you ever find me working at Fabled, come say hi, and I will talk your ear off about whatever I’m reading, fantasy or nonfiction or poetry (right now, I’m reading the latest Claire McKeever-Burgett and Holly Black books… in case you were wondering). I hope the books we read teach us to see our own stories in the story of God, just like our call to worship every week says. Thank you for welcoming me into the story of UBC as you have so kindly! I am so happy that I finally get to begin this part of life with you as a church family! Here’s to the next page and a radiant summer!

ANDIE’S POST

Hey friends!  Ubc is the grateful host of the McLennan County Diaper Collective, and they are in need of our support.  Nationwide, 46% of all families struggle to provide diapers for their children.  In McLennan County, 68% struggle to provide diapers for their children.  One of my favorite movie quotes EVER comes from the cartoon Robots: See a need, fill a need.  It's how I try to function in the world, it's how I've raised my kids, and as followers of Jesus, it captures the heart of the gospel.  The need I see lies with the Diaper Collective. Their largest gap in their supply exists with size 3, 4, 5, and 6 diapers.  This year, for both Mother's Day and Father's Day, we are doing a diaper drive!  You are invited to bring diapers this Sunday and next to help fill the need we see. Together, we can make a difference for families struggling to meet their children's basic needs!  I'm proud of us, and look forward to the opportunity to help!

JAMIE’S POST

I have no profundity to offer you in this season of Resurrection. I have only hair that never quite dries and this poem I came across today about humidity:

Ode to Humidity
P. Scott Cunningham

What am I if not what happens
when I try to run away?

Water falls out of me like
an opinion. I’m like a screen
door banging between two rivers.

Dear air, what’s inside me
you’re so desperate to take?

I put on the Atlantic like a sweater.
My head bobs on the surface
of a lake I’m named after.

Where do I belong?
My head asks. My body,
exasperated, answers.

NICOLE’S POST

UBC Spring Retreat

This past weekend, about 20 of us set out on an adventure to Meridian State Park for our UBC Spring Retreat.

GTG Outdoors, a non-profit organization led by UBCers Gabe & Meagan GarMelo, hosted our group and showed us the ropes of camping in the RAIN!!!

We spent a lot of time by the fire, laughing, playing games, napping in hammocks, and watching the kids splash in puddles, get covered in an obscene amount of mud, and explore trails, caves and the woods.

The most special part of this time together was the bonding that happens with a group when you are staying as warm, dry, and light-hearted as possible during a challenging outdoor experience. We all posed the question at least once, “should we just pack up and leave?”, and every single person voted “no!!!”; we wanted to stay, even though it was hard. This picture of community, resiliency, and the desire to spend meaningful time together was absolutely glorious!

If you’ve never gone on a GTG adventure with us, I implore you to consider joining next time! Nothing beats embracing beauty with this amazing group of people (and Gabe’s five star camp cooking).

We ended our evening on Saturday with spiritual reflection, sticky s’mores, and deep life conversations. I know we all feel better for choosing this rainy adventure together.

After the Congressional Budget Bill passed in July of 2025, we knew that we had to respond with radical hospitality through practical means.  The bill cut food assistance funding significantly, and will have lasting impacts on SNAP eligibility and work requirements.  With so much food insecurity already in our community, we launched Prep Parties at UBC.  Prep Parties are a chance for small groups of people to gather together, cook freezer meals, and stock the freezer in our kitchen.  The meals are free to anyone in our congregation or broader community who may need them, whatever the reason.  Too much month at the end of the money?  Busy weekend protesting and advocating for policy change?  Hosting a MiCasa and don't have time to cook?  Please grab a meal!

If you are interested in joining our next round of Prep Parties, please email andie@ubcwaco.org.  The plan is to restock on a quarterly basis, and we need shoppers, cooks, and hosts.

ANDIE’S POST

Thank you, Easter

Sometimes (often) I wonder what the point is of all of this.  We love, we show up, we advocate, and do we move the needle?  Do my words matter?  Does my time matter, my late nights thinking about the state of the world, the state of ubc, and the state of my own soul matter?  In my average to best moments, the answer is a resounding yes.  All of this matters.  Loving one person matters.  Showing up for one person matters.  Speaking up and speaking out matters.  I saw that in real time on Easter.  I met people who wanted to know what the catch is.  Who couldn't believe they experienced the warmth and hospitality that they did.  People who were floored that we talked about the realities of this world, of toxic religion, and of welcoming the stranger.  What you do matters.  Who you are in the community matters.  We are co-creating a place where people who have been holding their breath can exhale, and I am so grateful.  Thank you, Easter, for the heartbeat. Thank you, Jesus, for the work you did and the gift you are.  Thank you, Ubc, for embodying all of that and holding it together.  WIth love, Andie.

ANDIE’S POST

Hi friends, and welcome to Holy Week!  This season is such a beautiful invitation into the complexities of our faith and onto the road that Jesus walked to bring us along with him.  I want to highlight some of the opportunities at ubc that might help facilitate the wonder, grief, and mysticism available to us as we head into Easter.

Maundy Thursday:
Maundy Thursday recalls the last meal Jesus had with his friends.  In knowing that Judas would betray him, Peter would deny him, and the rest of the disciples would scatter, Jesus still washed their feet, shared his table, and offered his love.  We are honoring that expression of community by sharing a meal and taking communion together, 6pm on the 2nd.  You can support this time together by signing up to bring something through the Maundy Thursday post below.

Good Friday:
Good Friday is one of my favorite liturgies of the year.  Strange, maybe, especially when we are watching so much death around the world, but the unjust murder of Jesus is an underpinning of our shared narrative and feeling its weight reminds me of my deep connection to both Jesus and the crowd that crucified him.  Good Friday calls up the reality that the worst day in history came before the best, and it invites us to expand our capacity to hold those two truths together. Join us at 5:30pm on the 3rd; childcare is provided.

Whatever you have space for, I hope you'll attend.  We make this community, we care for this community, and we care for this community together.

THIS WEEK.

Youth Group- Wednesday, 6pm

Skate to Donate @ Skate Waco- Wednesday, April 1st, 6pm

Maundy Thursday Liturgy- Thursday, April 2nd, 5:30pm
Holy Week is almost here!  To further invite us into preparing for Easter, we are having a soup and bread dinner on Maundy Thursday at 6pm.  We will share a simple meal and acknowledge Jesus's institution of communion by participating in it together.  You can sign up to bring something below:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B44A5AC23A0F4C61-63010572-maundy

Good Friday Liturgy- Friday, April 3rd, 5:30pm

Sunday Liturgy- Sunday, 10:45am

Easter Egg Hunt- Easter, noon
We’ll have an egg hunt after church on Easter, and are accepting egg donations through March 29th. Egg donations: no chocolate, also cascarones accepted!

ANDIE’S POST

This is Ourselves Under Pressure
Bet you can guess what artist I'm listening to right now!  Every time I hear that song, I am reminded of my favorite lyric: Turned away from it all like a blind man // Sat on a fence, but it don't work // Keep coming up with love, but it's so slashed and torn

Friends, love is indeed slashed and torn.  It is an imperfect vehicle for the essence of a perfect God, and we are doing our very best to jump in and swim in its current as people who are seeking to be formed in the likeness of Christ.  This Sunday is Palm Sunday, and I am sure of two things: Jesus was not who the crowds wanted him to be, and Jesus was exactly who the crowds needed.  He loved the people he encountered so completely, and yet ultimately, Divine Love was slashed and torn.  Sitting on a fence is a very human response to a very complicated world, and yet we are invited to pick a side in the Cosmic drama of the unfolding kin-dom of heaven. May I suggest erring on the side of love?  Of hope?  Of restoration, resurrection, and shouts of Hosanna, imperfect as they may be?  In this way, we join Bowie and Mercury in their ineffable call to give love one more chance.  What incredible company!

UBC survives on the generosity of our congregation. Your financial contributions allow us to continue to create a space that is welcoming to all, embraces beauty, and seeks to live life to the fullest.

You can give, as you’re able, on Sunday mornings or set up a single or recurring online gift here.

If you ever have trouble with giving online or have a question about how to give, feel free to email administrator@ubcwaco.org.

CHURCH NEEDS

Sharyl West (Loeung) Mealtrain

With Sharyl’s permission, her story is being shared and the need for support is great for her and the boys right now. Please keep her in your prayers and consider helping with the meal train!

Prep Parties//Meals Available

Feed the Youths
Part of our youth group’s Wednesday gatherings is eating dinner, and you can sign up to be the source of said dinner!

KIDS CAMP

Nicole has reserved 4 girl spots and 4 boy spots for Passport Camp July 19-22nd @ Lake Brownwood. Cost per spot is $408. This is for completed 3rd grade- completed 6th graders! We will also take a male and female chaperone and need drivers.

Some scholarship money may be awarded through Passport and fundraising through UBC. Nicole has applied for the money and will be able to disperse what we are awarded and what we raise on an as-needed basis.
