Last time I did the newsletter, Andy Clark, bassist extradonaire, asked me if I had forgotten about it until the last minute since I just posted a poem. But I didn’t. I just like putting poetry in your path. And so here is a poem by Marcus Wicker.
How to Continue Loving the World Despite Years of Impediment
If death is the absence of life, / then death’s death is life.

Gather your losses, oblong
& indiscriminate: avocado rot,
football, cracked soap dish;
dropped eggshells, embryo
gone. Gather mutilated joy.
Smelted promises. Aloft,
here & now. In open air.
Gather your heartbreak, wind-
ing & windowless. Animal
the shadow, lurking
at the edges
of your mouth.
Needle into a nest
your intricate sorrows.
Roost there. Gather
yourself. In a clearing—
Or gather your losses
like twin sheets, stripped
from a sick child’s bed.
I know I know it’s difficult
to face it alone.
To know you must
gather your darkness
or lose yourself to the animal
that thrives therein. To vanquish
your losses in daylight,
gather your life
by the scruff. Hold on
to what you can.
EMBRACE BEAUTY FUND
As we’ve navigated changes and created a new vision for Ubc, we have found that we have an increasing need for meeting our budget goals. Would you consider establishing a recurring donation to our community? Recurring donations allow us to have a sense of how much money we are working with each month, which as you might imagine is extremely helpful in budgeting. CHURCH NEEDS
Volunteer with UBC for Baylor Move-In!- Thursday, August 20th, 7:45am-12:30pm
UBC is forming a team of volunteers to help with Baylor's annual Move2BU move-in event to welcome new students. Volunteers will be helping unload students' cars and transporting items up to their rooms to help them settle in and feel welcomed into the community. Our shift is Thursday 8/20 from 7:45am-12:30pm (though you are welcome to leave as needed). If you are interested in volunteering, sign up here to get more details from Greer. Note: This does involve physical labor in the heat.
Please Feed the Youths
We are looking for more volunteers to bring Youth Dinners over the coming months. If you or your household is interested, fill out this form.
The form has a place to put the household name and what food you plan on bringing. Please note that some of our students have dietary restrictions! We are so thankful for all of our friends who support our youth!
