ANDIE’S POST
Carving Space
I had one of those weekends that reaffirmed that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Friday night, our family went camping with a bunch of other UBCers (shoutout GTG Outdoors for providing an incredible experience), and it was beyond words beautiful. I woke up early on Saturday, tossed on a sweatshirt, and meandered to our base camp site. The lake was still. Everything was dewy. There was the slightest hint of Fall chill. But as I looked around at the people who were chatting, as I heard our kids playing and causing the slightest amount of chaos, the most breathtaking sight was this group of people who came together because they like each other. Because they wanted to get to know each other better. Because they wanted to deepen existing relationships. People I literally did not know two years ago greeted me and my family with smiles, familiarity, and "How did yall sleep?" It's hard to encapsulate just how special and precious it was to swap stories of waking up to little feet in my face and how someone from our group had to tell a bunch of frat guys to cut the music. The next day, we headed to the pumpkin patch, and once again, UBCers gathered to spend time together outside of Sunday morning liturgy. I found myself mesmerized by this group of people who wanted to share this communal experience. It was so cool; I would take my kids to the big slide or to the gravel pit, and we'd see someone we knew. Two UBC elementary kids helped my twins up to the top of the big trampoline. Connections were solidified, memories were made and shared, and it was magic. I say all of this under the heading of "Carving Space" because we talk a lot about self-care these days. I am 10/10 for boundaries, for thriving, for doing what we need to do to ensure our ongoing mental, emotional, and physical health. In that, I think we've forgotten that self-care doesn't always mean alone. One of the best things I've done for my well-being and mental health is camp with my church, especially following my partner's recent car accident. We often say that Waco needs UBC, and truer words have never been spoken. But I'm wondering if we've taken the time to realize that we need UBC. We need each other. We need time together. We need to experience community outside of a Sunday morning. Do with that what you will, friends, but for what it's worth, I think carving out space to be together is a wildly important pursuit.
