JAMIE’S POST
If you didn’t know, I teach a section of Dying and Death Education at Baylor on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I offer my students a standing semester-long assignment: as you go about your life, notice what makes you feel particularly alive.
Irvin Yalom has likened death to the sun—that which illuminates and gives shape to the world yet, if you stare directly at it, hurts.
I ask my students to notice what makes them feel alive to offer balance to that pain and insight into that illumination.
On Tuesdays, I ask them to share their insights with their classmates. You’d be surprised what you’ll find when you are actively monitoring for what makes you feel alive.
At Ubc, we talk about Lent as a season of attending the question of what it means to live life to the fullest—who am I/what am I for?
There is an element of this sacred task that is creative—what kind of lives are we building? To what might we aspire? From what might we repent?(in a turning away sense, not the vague shame sense)
But there is another element to this sacred task that is more like remembering. We used to know who we are and what we are for. We’ve always known. We were just better at it when we were babies.
I have a sense that I’ve seen my students getting glimpses into remembering this sort of thing after being open to what makes them feel alive for several months on end.
And so I want to offer you this as a Lenten practice: Notice what makes you feel particularly alive. Keep a list if you’d like. Then, when you’re ready, share it with someone and speculate wildly about what it might mean.
THIS WEEK.

Wanted: Small Group Hosts!
We have a veritable slew of potential Small Group participants waiting in the wings and we are looking for hosts and/or facilitators. Our small group format is communal, so you can trade off facilitating or pick someone to lead discussions/activities for the week or season. If you are interested in hosting a new group in your home or in facilitating one at the church, please email Andie at andie@ubcwaco.org. If you are interested in joining, same email, different subject line!
Prep Parties//Meals Available
After the Congressional Budget Bill passed in July of 2025, we knew that we had to respond with radical hospitality through practical means. The bill cut food assistance funding significantly, and will have lasting impacts on SNAP eligibility and work requirements. With so much food insecurity already in our community, we launched Prep Parties at UBC. Prep Parties are a chance for small groups of people to gather together, cook freezer meals, and stock the freezer in our kitchen. The meals are free to anyone in our congregation or broader community who may need them, whatever the reason. Too much month at the end of the money? Busy weekend protesting and advocating for policy change? Hosting a MiCasa and don't have time to cook? Please grab a meal!
If you are interested in joining our next round of Prep Parties, please email andie@ubcwaco.org. The plan is to restock on a quarterly basis, and we need shoppers, cooks, and hosts.
Feed the Youths
Part of our youth group’s Wednesday gatherings is eating dinner, and you can sign up to be the source of said dinner!
