ANDIE’S POST
Florence + The Machine + The Glorification of Busy
"But look at me run myself ragged/blood on the stage/but how can I leave you when you're screaming my name?" Listening to "Everybody Scream" this morning, I was particularly struck by this lyric. This might be a surprise to you (lol), but I am not very good at disengaging. Last week I was on vacation, and I responded to some emails, took a couple of phone calls, and lowkey officiated a wedding. There are myriad reasons why we find ourselves addicted to the buzz and busyness of this life, and yours are your own, but after some reflection, I'm learning to make peace with and grow through mine. Here they are, unceremoniously: A) The church has been a vehicle for harm and rejection for a lot of us. B) I never want anyone to feel like they are a burden, obligation, or like they are forgotten. C) I overestimate my capacity while simultaneously overestimating my available time. As I sit and try to get "caught up" from my time off, I am also telling myself that the imaginary timeline I've created is just that, imaginary, thus I can do so at my own pace. It is wild how much weight I've given to the assumptions I've made about other people's assumptions of me, and though I've for the most part overcome the need to be needed, a whole new host of things to work through is queued and at the ready. So in response, I'll replace the individual pressures I'm feeling with these affirmations: A) I don't single-handedly represent someone's church experience. B) If someone feels something in relation to me, they get to tell me that. C) I am allowed to rest, be human, have fluctuation, and have balance. I write all of this because I am hearing from many of you how busy the fall is, and that's okay! AND, I would encourage you to sit with yourself and with God to try to determine how much of your busyness is circumstantial, and how much of your busyness is rooted in a need or wound that deserves to be tended with gentleness and care. Love yall. -Andie
