JAMIE’S POST

In the gospel story, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness praying, fasting and ultimately facing temptation about what sort of life he would live. Through all of this, he is taking up the question of what it means to be Jesus, asking “who am I?” And “what am I for?” The season of Lent invites us to follow Jesus into the wilderness and take up the question of what it means to be who we are created to be. What does it mean to live and live well, to live life to the fullest? When we take stock of our lives, what belongs? What doesn’t? Who are we becoming, and what is coming out of that becoming? This season invites us to pare our busy-ness down, to quiet ourselves, and to listen to the story that is unfolding in our lives.

This can be uncomfortable. At any given time, there are probably myriad ways where each of us has fallen into patterns that are out of line with who we’d hope to be. The same is true of the ways we are wandering the lifelong path of being formed in the way of Christ. We are ever situated to reconsider the way we love God, love our neighbor, and practice the genuineness, presence, and care of Christ in our ordinary lives. Lent offers us an invitation to think of these things in earnest.

Perhaps you’ve taken on some sort of fast or spiritual practice this season to aid in focusing your attention on the invitation of Lent. If so, I hope that’s meaningful for you. If you haven’t (and its never too late to start if you want to), perhaps you’ll simply take a few moments each day to be quiet and think about who you are becoming. However the wilderness finds you this year, may your wandering be a blessing.

P.S.—Be sure to check out the “GROUPS” section of the newsletter for details on our Lent groups.

ANDIE’S POST

Beauty from ashes is perhaps the kindest and cruelest element of our faith.  We want to be the best version of ourselves, the most patient, kind, loving, justice-minded people we can be.  AND, the things we sometimes have to wade through to become those people are painful.  When silver is processed, it is super-heated, and the impurities float to the top.  The dross is then skimmed from the top, and the metal is made stronger.  Lent is a reminder that we, too, are in process, and sometimes that process requires a little heat.  I know I can oscillate between putting crippling amounts of pressure on myself and giving myself a free pass, but Lent is a time for stability.  It is a steady march to Easter, to the promise of refined and renewed life.  While many of us associate Lent with giving something up, I would ask us to contextualize our actions in this way:  Where is dross building up in my life?  What needs to be skimmed away to reveal the strength below?  Perhaps your questions look more like this: Where do I need to apply heat?  Where do I need to engage more fully in my life with Jesus so that I may delight in a life lived to its fullest?  My Lenten practice will be letting tomorrow’s work be for tomorrow.  Any time I am tempted (at 11:00 at night!) to grab my computer and get a jump start on the next day’s agenda, I will settle in instead.  I will settle into that moment, breathe deeply, and allow the reality of God’s presence in my life to swirl around me, and I will close my laptop.  It is the fire that I need to keep me still and centered, and it is the dross of over-performing that needs gently removed.  If you are taking stock and have a sense of what refinement you need in your own life and want to share it with someone, you can send it to me.  I’d love to support you and pray for you during this season.  Either way, may you identify the thing in your life that needs altered and strengthened, and may it result in a lightening of your heart, spirit, and body.

THIS WEEK

Ash Wednesday - February 14th - 7am; 5:30pm

We will have two opportunities to attend the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, at 7am and 5:30pm. Join us as we gather to focus our attention on our mortality and growth as we enter the season of Lent.

TOPH’S POST

In staff meetings recently, we have been thinking about this next year as a community, and have been discerning and discussing what it would like to lighten the burdens of those in our community, and of UBC herself.   In other words, how might we bear witness to and for each other, reminding ourselves of the abundant life and beauty found in Christ, and how might we bare witness to this lightening in our community and the broader world?  Which for me brought to mind Jesus word’s in Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you…and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”  I was then reminded of Cole Arthur Riley’s work, This Here Flesh, in which she writes:  “I don’t have many certainties about God.  I do have hopes.  Chief among them is that it’s true what they say: that God is love, is made of love, and looks at the faces of you and me and my gramma and, without hesitation or demand, delights.”  As we move into 2024, I don’t have a lot of certainties about what this year may hold, but I have a lot of hopes.  I hope UBC will flourish in all the important ways: loving the community within our walls well taking great delight in each other, welcoming those outside of our community with open arms and active listening so that we might better discern how to come along side of them, and that we will be a people so caught up in the mystery and wonder of God our joy will brighten the Waco community.  One certainty I do have: it is a great delight to pastor this community, and to journey alongside of you as we seek the kingdom of God together.  As we are entering into the Lenten season, and you are discerning what you might let go of or what you might pick up,  if you would like someone to journey with you through active listening and prayer, I would love to meet with you during the Lenten season for  a coffee or a pint or a phone call.

ANDIE’S POST

How are you doing?  How’s your mental health?  Is there something exciting on the horizon?  How’s work?  How’s your relationship?  How’s being single?  How are you doing after the divorce?  How are the kids?  How are you doing in the midst of wanting kids so badly?  How’s school?  How is the grieving?  How is your joy?

If no one has asked you recently, now they have.  If you want to answer any of these, if you just want to feel heard, you can send me your responses at andie@ubcwaco.org.  I’ll send you mine, too.
The beauty and benefit of community is that we face things together.  We need each other, and we only function in wholeness when we are caring for one another.  No one goes without when we are all seeking to meet each other’s needs.  Many parts moving as one.

Today, take some time to reflect on what it means to be a part of UBC.  What is life-giving about being together?  What do you need from this particular gathering of people? What does this particular gathering of people need from you?  As we continue to set intentions for 2024, may we continue to ask ourselves those questions and strengthen one another as individuals and as a whole.  It is a gift to find a place to love and to call home; may we care for it as it cares for us today.

ICYMI: TOWN HALL UPDATE

Hi friends!  Last weekend we had our first Town Hall of 2024.  We had a great turnout, and I’m grateful for the chance to communicate about our vision and intentions for the year.

-Our 2024 budget was approved and is in place.  If you don’t know the process, the staff creates the budget, and sends it to the finance team.  After they have a chance to ask questions and make suggestions, they pass it on to the leadership team. The leadership team is the final stop before approval.  Thanks to our staff and teams for their work on this!

-We are actively working on filling our open kids and youth positions.  We have assembled a visioning team who will speak into the job description and requirements, and we want your input, as well!  There is a link to a Visioning Survey in today’s newsletter.  Whether you are a parent, student, or a UBCer in any capacity, we want your perspective.  After the survey closes, our team will get together to draft the job postings.  At this point, our intention is to hire two part-time positions.  More info will be available as we progress.

-In the meantime, kids and youth are being cared for by some of our lovely UBCers and their volunteers.  Thank you to Margo Shanks and Brooke Reich for their leadership of our kids ministry, and to Emily MacDonald for her leadership of our youth ministry.  They have all agreed to continue in their respective capacities until we hire new staff.

-Kids who have completed 3rd through 5th grade will be able to attend Passport Kids Camp in July.  The cost is $388 and the camp runs from the 27th-30th.

-Our youth group will go on a summer retreat this year, dates TBA.  This will be for students who have completed 6th through 12th grade.

-We are working on fundraising opportunities for both kids camp and the youth retreat.

-The HR team is looking for a couple of UBCers to join them as they care for the staff.  The HR team is shifting back into more of a support role, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, and providing a listening and empathetic ear for our staff.  If that is something you are interested in, please talk to one of our pastors or a member of the HR team.

Again, thank you to all who participated in Town Hall, either by attending last weekend or reading this update.  It takes all of us, and I’m honored to love and serve UBC together.

Grace and peace,
Andie

JAMIE’S POST

Greetings. As you may know, we now find ourselves in the midst of the season of Epiphany. We began the liturgical year in Advent, looking honestly at the gathered gloom of the world and cultivating a longing for things to be made right. Then, on Christmas, we found a candle lit among the gloom in the birth of Jesus, God-with-us. A couple of weeks later, we entered Epiphany by remembering when the magi followed a star to find the baby that shook the foundations of the cosmos.

This is a season of illumination, and it is so in more ways than one. In a literal sense, on this side of the winter solstice, the daylight hours are increasing. We’ve also turned over a new year and are becoming acquainted with the newness and potential of 2024. Further, the lectionary texts are offering us vignettes of the early parts of Jesus’ story. Through these stories we are being re-introduced to Jesus, and in him we find on display what God would have us know about who God is and what God would have us know about who we are created to be.

I’m fond of this season because I have found it helpful to be invited into a time each year of intentionally trying to cultivate a holy curiosity about who Jesus is. I (we?) have a tendency to settle into a way of thinking about God that, in time, can tempt me to confuse my own ideas about God with the whole of who God is. Epiphany reminds us that we have more to learn. About God. About how to love our neighbor. And it prepares us in some way for Lent, where we take up the question of what it means to live and live well, of who we are what we are for.

If you are interested in spending some time with the stories outside of Sunday morning, you can find the texts for each week at lectionarypage.net. It is not a pretty website, but it gets the job done.

FROM LEADERSHIP TEAM

Jeff is no longer serving as UBC's Office Manager. We appreciate all he has done for UBC while serving in this role. You can still direct all administrative emails to administrator@ubcwaco.org.

In the interim, Risse Miller has graciously stepped in to cover the Office Manager responsibilities. The job opening will be posted soon.

5th & 6th Grade Update

Beginning this week, our 6th graders will officially join the youth group as part of middle school (6th, 7th, and 8th) with programming on Wednesday evenings. Meanwhile our 5th graders will rejoin upper elementary school as part of a 4th and 5th grade class on Sunday mornings. Current 5th graders will transition to youth group over the summer as they promote to 6th grade.

Our hope is that this shift not only better aligns with the way local schools group these grades but also with the actual age and stage of our kiddos. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to brooke@ubcwaco.org.

ANDIE’S POST

The most inspiring thing I’ve read regarding New Year’s resolutions is along the lines of this: “There are no rules that say your resolution has to make you a better person.  Get vengeful; make it weird.”  Okay, maybe not the most inspiring thing, but it brings up a good point.  We are often cogs in the never-ending self-improvement machine, and that doesn’t seem to get any easier within our systems of faith.  While we might say that we don’t believe that we have to earn God’s love, the truth is many of us are driven by the perfectionism and striving that has become a hallmark of modern performative Christianity.  We might say that who we are is enough, but we still tuck away parts of ourselves that we are afraid to bring to God or to one another.  More and more, I am finding the release and beauty that exists in those moments of falling apart.  There is grace and space inherent in the rhythm of Jesus for that kind of fracturing, because it is in our authenticity that we best experience the enveloping welcome of God.  There is tremendous value in allowing ourselves the gift of honesty and expression, even if we fear that we will be tried and found lacking.  If you are ready to make 2024 your year, yes, absolutely, you’ve got this!  If you barely survived 2023, and the “fresh start” of 2024 feels daunting, there is so much room for you, too.  Either way, let’s take some time and acknowledge the Divine love that surrounded us last year, surrounds us this year, and awaits us in every year we have.  Happy New Year, UBC; may you love God, embrace beauty, and live life to the fullest knowing that your value is intrinsic, not earned.

ANDIE’S POST

This week, I find myself with something looming: my least favorite Sunday of Advent. Joy. Now you might be surprised because I am a bigggggg fan of laughing, fun, connection, and adventure. Joy is different. Joy seems daunting. Joy exists in another container all together. What is it about joy that can make us feel conflicted? If I were to hazard a guess, it is the pressure to experience something that we aren't always feeling. It is the cliches of "happiness is fleeting, but joy is always present." Here is my encouragement to myself and to anyone else who is holding tension in light of joy: Joy can undergird what the heart cannot hope to feel. The Spirit wraps us in the joy of her presence, and if all we can offer is a deep breath to that end, it is enough. See you this weekend, my friends.

JAMIE’S POST

Some of you may know that my dad died recently. It was actually seven weeks ago this evening. As I have been becoming acquainted with the winding paths of grief, I have found myself everywhere from numb to inconsolable to awash in immense gratitude. Some moments are more pleasant than others, but I have found it meaningful to make space for the hard parts; to acknowledge and express my own sadness and loss. Something about making this space helps me deal and helps me live more fully. I’m sure some of you have lost someone this year or are reminded of someone long lost as we navigate this holiday season. Or perhaps you haven’t lost someone in a literal sense, but you’ve lost the way you used to relate to someone. Or you’ve lost a job. Or a dream. Grief seems, at its core, to be a response to change, and change is a constant. Whatever the nature of your grief, I’d like to invite you to gather together at 5:30 on Thursday for a liturgy of mourning. This is a time to acknowledge a range of difficult emotions that come with being human and offer them to the One who is near to the brokenhearted. Perhaps in bringing our losses together, we’ll find strength to move through the remainder of this year and turn our eyes toward the next.

ANDIE’S POST

Waiting is unavoidable.  Waiting is hard.  Waiting asks something of us we don’t always have to give, and yet, the Season of Waiting, Advent, is one of the most significant moments in our liturgical calendar.  This upcoming Sunday marks the first day of Advent, a time where we enter into the gap between the words of the Old Testament prophets and the arrival of the Messiah.  We rejoin and relive and retell the story of silence that gave way to the Light as we celebrate Jesus' birth.  Advent grants us the opportunity to practice patience, anticipation, and gratitude in a fresh way each year.  It reminds us that, while God exists outside of the bounds of time, we certainly do not.  We have to find ways to weather painful seasons of waiting, to survive them, and perhaps even find purpose in them.   Every season ends, even when we fear they never will, and those ends are thin places where the presence of the Divine meets the realities of humanity.

If you find yourself in such a space as we move into Advent, my hope is that you are able to take a couple of well-deserved deep breaths.  Remember that waiting is unavoidable.  Waiting is hard.  Waiting is significant.  More importantly, remember that you do not wait alone.  As we once again prepare to mark the unfolding reign of Christ together, we can find connection and hope in our UBC community and in the restoration that is promised to this world.  If you need a place to process, I would encourage you to join us for The Liturgy of Mourning taking place on December 7th at 5:30pm.  Lament is one of a thousand natural outflows of waiting, and sometimes we just need somewhere to bring our aches.  The Liturgy of Mourning is one such place.  However you choose to wade through waiting, my hope is that you experience glimmers of grace in the midst of it.  May God surprise you with goodness in all things, even in difficult times of inbetween. Sending you my love, Andie.

TOPH’S POST

Thanksgiving has long been my favorite holiday for two primary reasons: food and family gatherings. We didn’t see my dad’s side of the family very often, but each Thanksgiving growing up we would get together at one of his 4 siblings house, or my grandparents, and we would feast. There was an annual football game, and while I was too young to play most years, I would still be included in the game. As I got older, so did my dad and his siblings, and by the time I was in HS and could really affect the game, the game wasn’t what it once was. I remember one year, at my Uncle Mike’s house, we were playing, and my Aunt Helen was the quarterback. I was probably in 4 th or 5 th grade, and I went in on the last play of the game. My Aunt Helen, who was the best quarterback among the bunch, threw me the ball, I caught what would be the game winning touchdown! Looking back, I realize they definitely left me open, and were all probably tired and ready to go in, but to my young self all those things didn’t matter: I was included and celebrated.

I’ll turn 44 next month, and Thanksgiving is still my favorite holiday, but a lot of life has happened as well, and Thanksgiving week happens to be a time when a few hard moments have happened. It is the week I found out my friend Cliff would soon be arrested, and the next November when he was found guilty of the crimes he committed I would learn a bit of what it means to be a prison chaplain for a season. It is the week my ex-wife and I separated, and I would never spend another night in the home we created, and that very same week, my Uncle Mike died of covid. Since it was November 2020, in the height of the pandemic, I would spend Thanksgiving and Christmas alone for the first time in my life. Life can be hard, and the holiday season is one for many in which there is a lot of joy, and memories of pain. If this is case for you, know you are not alone, and there is more than enough room within God’s expansive love to hold space for both. As we enter this season, a prayer I have for you is that you will feel included and celebrated. You, as you are now, in your joy or pain, in your doubt or assurance, will know in very real and tangible ways you are loved and wanted. We, as community at UBC, celebrate how God has uniquely crafted you through your journey.

Christ the King

As we near Christ the King Sunday, I’m curious what comes to mind for you when you see the phrase “Christ the King.” Does that mean something specific to you? What does the world look like when Christ is King? Are there glimmers of that around us? Or perhaps you find great discomfort with the phrase “Christ the King”—what’s that discomfort like? You get the idea—I’m curious about how that phrase finds you. I would appreciate it if you would take a moment to jot some thoughts down—could be a word, a poem, a paragraph, etc.; you can do that here.

UBC Kids Merch!
While cleaning out the kids ministry supply closet, we found a bin filled with t-shirt treasures!  On November 12th and 19th, we will be selling tees in the lobby for a suggested cash donation of $5. All proceeds will be used to stock our classrooms.  We have a variety of sizes, toddler through adult, so that you can rep UBC Kids wherever you go!

ANDIE’S POST

Today, my firstborn turns 17, and I am feeling all the feelings.

I have several questions: How?  Why?  How dare you?  How could you?  Okay, maybe not the last two, at least not out loud, but the reality of time and its consistent marching forward is hitting me hard.  We cannot alter the carriage of time, and that is perhaps both freeing and heart wrenching.  That said, no season seems to pass more quickly, and yet somehow more slowly, than the last two months of the year.  Family gatherings, beautiful memories, painful absences, and old wounds swirl together into a blur as we head into the latter part of November and Advent.  Our bodies remember and carry the exceptional and the exhausting; my hope is that you will hold yourself gently as we approach this complicated time of the year.  If you are anticipating the joy and happy noise of the holiday season, take a breath and sink softly into the goodness that awaits you.  If you are in a different place, and the anxiety and sadness of the next handful of weeks is looming, take a breath and remember you are not alone.  In the darkness, a Light has entered the world, and that Light goes where you go and stays where you stay. I so appreciate the opportunities at UBC to be authentic and present to whatever we are experiencing, which for me, is a mix of both beauty and pain.  Sharing a meal at Love Feast spoke to a place in me that longs for connection and tradition.  I look forward to the Liturgy of Grief, which I anticipate will speak to the place in me that acknowledges what is missing and what has been stolen.  Time carries on, but it is Jesus and his community who carries us. My love is with you today. -Andie

CHRIST THE KING

from jamie

Christ the King Sunday is coming up in a few weeks. This is a mix between a finale of the church calendar and a New Year’s Eve moment; an end and a beginning. In this culminating moment, we lay grasp to the hope that all of this shakes out in the end; a shaking out that has something to do with Christ’s reign as some combination of ultimate cosmic king/meek lamb that is slaughtered yet standing. The bible seems to prefer poetry to talk about things like this, leaving questions opened and unanswered and inviting us into the world of imagination. In that spirit, I’m curious what comes to mind for you when you see the phrase “Christ the King.” Does that mean something specific to you? What does the world look like when Christ is King? Are there glimmers of that around us? Or perhaps you find great discomfort with the phrase “Christ the King”—what’s that discomfort like? You get the idea—I’m curious about how that phrase finds you. I’ve created a google form that you can use to answer, and I’ll have an analog method of answering available at church on Sunday. I would appreciate it if you would take a moment to jot some thoughts down—could be a word, a poem, a paragraph, etc. Here’s the form.

CHURCH NEEDS

Early Holiday Shopping for Arrow

The holidays are coming up, and UBC has a tradition of teaming up with our partners to provide Christmas gifts for kids who might not receive any without some support. This year we are partnering with Arrow Child and Family Ministries, and we have committed to buy gift for 14 girls who are connected to their program. This year they are doing a Christmas store for parents to shop, and also collecting gift cards for parents. If you would like to shop for gifts for one of the girls, you can sign-up in the foyer on Sunday, or email Toph. The girls ages range from 1-11yr, and they are asking for 2 or so gifts per kid, and there is no need to spend more than $30 on each gift. The gifts need to be at UBC by Sunday, November 19th. If you have any questions, please contact toph@ubcwaco.org

Tech Booth Volunteers

We are looking for a few more folks to volunteer in the tech booth on slides, lights, and the livestream. Previous experience isn’t required—we can train you! Contact jamie@ubcwaco.org if you’re interested.

ALL SAINTS DAY
from andie

“Nobody gets it, nobody listens, and nobody cares about me!” I cried as I sat on a front porch swing in the dark.  Next to me was the one person in the world who did indeed get it, who listened, who cared about me.  As I shook with tears of frustration, embarrassment, and adolescent rage, my Grandma Mary put her hand on my back and didn’t say a word.  She always knew when to speak and when to stay silent.  She didn’t doubt me, correct me, or scare me, which was a rarity in the volatility that marked my home life.  My grandma just sat with me. She was present to my pain, and she gave me precious space to experience it without repercussion.  When I was new in my faith, my biggest hesitation came in the form of a heavenly “Father.”  Sure, this Father was somehow less angry and punitive than my own, despite the genocide en masse that was ascribed to Him.  “He is a good Father who gives good gifts” my pastors and leaders would say, and my job was to worship Him for who He is and what He has done for me. I couldn’t.  I just could not bring myself to invite another domineering male presence into my fragile heart.  So I didn’t, despite everyone around me insisting otherwise.  Instead, in the intuitive wisdom held by most teens, I decided I would love and welcome and even worship a vision of God that resonated more true.  I decided that I needed a heavenly Grandma.  I need a divine Grandma so warm and so gracious and so safe that it would be natural for me to sit in Her presence.  I needed a Grandma God who held space and held my heart, just like my own grandmother did time and time again.

When I light a candle on All Saints’ Day, it is for my Mary, the grandma who allowed me to breathe and question and be incensed and fall in love with justice.  I wear her pearls, and I think of the legacy she had in my life and in my faith.  I am grateful for the ministry of attending that she modeled for me, and for the countless times I have had the opportunity to put a hand gently on someone’s back in comfort, solidarity, and lament.  Whoever it is that you light a candle for this week, may you experience the warmth and light of their legacy.  We give thanks for the saints who have taught us this gentle and empowered way of being in the world, and we look to their example to more fully love those who will be here after we have gone.  My heart is with you as you reflect and remember.

With love, Andie.

ANDIE’S POST

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid” John 14:27, NRSV.

Many of us have a complicated relationship with peace.  We have been told that God is a God of peace, that the peace of Christ surpasses understanding, that we are to be peacemakers, and that the peacemakers will be called blessed.  And yet, we are watching lives stolen, destroyed, irreparably altered with no apology.  We are bearing witness to the very worst humanity offers itself in real time.  Where is the peace in that?

In this moment, I am especially grateful for the great grace and space UBC offers to those of us whose hearts are troubled.  We are allowed to be afraid, confused, sad, and angry.  That posture is reflective of the words of Jesus in John 14.  Jesus was assuring his friends that though he would be absent for a moment, the Spirit of God would become more and more present to them in the midst of their uncertainty and fear, not despite it.  His words are an invitation to those with heavy hearts, not a condemnation of them. Jesus does not give violence as the world does, rather, Jesus offers something profound and beautiful through the imminence of the Spirit.  Jesus gives the mercy of the Spirit: close, constant, and available in every moment of helplessness, panic, and grief.

I don’t know how to alleviate the suffering that we are seeing in Gaza.  It is devastating, and angering, and maddening that violence is winning in so many parts of our world.  Each day, it is harder and harder to stay engaged and present to the pain that swirls around us.  Friends, peace is not the absence of hard things.  Peace is not avoidance.  Peace, in all its various forms, is something we co-create with God and one another for the flourishing and well-being of all.  May we find the resilience to bear witness to the realities of this world so that we may engage in the serious work of peacemaking.  I don't know what it looks like moment to moment, but I know it is worthy of our investment, emotion, and time.

God, we bring our siblings of every background, nationality, and belief to you.  Teach us, and them, to love as we are loved.  Make peace among all humanity, as is your nature, character, and name.  Form us more fully in the likeness and grace of Christ, so that we too may make peace. Amen.

ANDIE’S POST

Happy October, friends!

I’m actually wearing a flannel right now, and yes, I definitely recognize that I will regret that decision later.  It reminds me of the old saying, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”  Do our physical steps of preparation somehow manifest the realities we want over the ones we have?  Will wearing a flannel on a 90 degree day bring me the Ghosty Girl Fall of my dreams?

I don’t have those answers, but here’s what I do know: As we look to a new month filled with possibilities, opportunities, anxieties, friendship, loneliness, and all the rest of what awaits us, we do so surrounded by the love of God and one another.  Sometimes that makes all the difference, and sometimes it doesn’t, but my hope for us is that we can find some of the courage and resilience it takes to dream about something beautiful and move towards it.  That we would grant ourselves permission to reach and grow.

So wear the flannel, write the song, make the phone call, start the non-profit, brush your teeth, take a shower, take a breath, celebrate, grieve, rest, or whatever else it is that October offers you.  Find a rhythm and vision that grants your heart the goodness it deserves.

THIS WEEK

St. Francis Liturgy - October 4th, 5:30pm

You might have noticed we have a bunch of St. Francis statues around the building. That’s because he embodied a way to be in the world that we want to call ourselves toward. October 4th is the Feast Day of St. Francis, and we will be gathering for a short liturgy from 5:30-6.

Youth Group - Wednesday, 6pm

5th & 6th Grade Gathering - Wednesday, 6pm

Pints w/ Toph - Wednesday, 6pm, Pinewood Pub

College Hangout - October 5th

Our next college hangout is Thursday night, October 5th, at UBC.  We will be playing some games, one epic version of a particular game, and enjoying tacos.  You can sign-up in the foyer at UBC, or just email toph@ubcwaco.org to sign-up.

Out on the Brazos - October 7th

We are setting up a booth again at Out on the Brazos, and we need some help.  Out on the Brazos is Waco’s largest gay pride event, and we were only 1 of four churches last year.  This is a great opportunity to show support four LGBTQIA+ community in Waco, and let me folks know UBC is a place where they can find full inclusion and belonging.  If you would like to volunteer to be at the tent for a an hour or two, please contact toph@ubcwaco.org  The event runs from 10am-6pm.

LGBTQIA+ and Allies Potluck - October 8th

We are having our first LGBTQIA+ and Allies gathering on October 8th after church.  This will be a time in which we can get to know each other better, share some of our story, and eat some delicious food (which you will help provide!). This will be a potluck, and UBC will provide the main dish and drinks, we would like you to bring a side dish or dessert to share.  If you have any questions, please contact toph@ubcwaco.org.  There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer.
